What is Panchang?

Learn what Panchang means in Vedic astrology: tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, vara, and how to use daily timings like Rahu Kalam.

Meaning of Panchang

Panchang (Pañcāṅga) literally means “five limbs” of time. In Hindu astrology it describes the quality of a day through five key elements: Vara (weekday), Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga, and Karana.

Together these are used to choose auspicious moments (Muhurat), understand religious observances, and align activities with traditional calendars.

Why location and date matter

Sunrise, sunset, and day-length segments (used for Rahu Kalam and similar divisions) depend on where you are on Earth and the civil date in your timezone.

Always set your city or coordinates when reading a Panchang online so timings match your local sky.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Panchang the same as the Gregorian calendar?

No. The Gregorian calendar is solar and fixed by civil dates. Panchang layers lunar days (tithi), nakshatra, and other elements on top of the day—useful for festivals and muhurtas.
