How to use this tool
Two profiles
Enter birth date, time, and place for both partners. Accurate time matters for Moon position and nakshatra-based rules.
Run the match
We score eight Ashta-Kuta factors (shown as bars) and show an overall 0–10 score. The glossary below explains all ten classical porutham names.
Compare traditions
If your family also uses North Indian 36 guna matching, try Kundali matching and read our comparison guide.
How this calculator maps to porutham
Results use the same eight-factor Ashta-Kuta engine as our Kundali tool (Varna, Vashya, Tara/Dina, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Rasi/Bhakut, Nadi). That aligns with Dina, Vasiya (Vashya), Yoni, Rasi, Gana, and Nadi. Classical Mahendra, Rajju, Vedha, and Stree Deerkha often use extra nakshatra tables—see the glossary for meanings; if your tradition requires them, check with a family astrologer or almanac.
Meanings of the 10 poruthams
Short definitions for learning and search. Names and exact rules can vary by region (Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada paddhati).
Dina (Dinam)
Harmony between the couple’s birth stars
Dina counts nakshatras from the groom’s star to the bride’s. It reflects everyday rhythm, well-being, and how stable the bond may feel over time. It lines up with Tara/Dina-style rules in Ashta-Kuta matching.
Gana
Temperament: Deva, Manushya, or Rakshasa
Each nakshatra has a gana—Deva (refined), Manushya (balanced), or Rakshasa (intense). This porutham checks whether habits of speech, patience, and emotional pace suit a long marriage.
Mahendra
Auspicious spacing for lineage and welfare
Mahendra considers a favourable count between the two birth stars, often tied to children, family continuity, and overall auspiciousness. Regional almanacs may use slightly different cut-offs.
Yoni
Animal pairing and mutual comfort
Stars map to animal yonis (e.g. horse, elephant, serpent). Friendly or same-yoni pairs are preferred; hostile pairs score lower. It hints at instinctive ease and attraction.
Rasi
Moon-sign harmony (Rasi adhipati / Bhakut)
Rasi porutham compares both Moon signs: emotional understanding, home life, and whether certain sign distances are avoided—similar to Rasi/Bhakut in 36-guna charts.
Rajju
Body-zone (rajju) groups of nakshatras
Rajju sorts stars into groups linked to body regions (head, neck, foot, etc.). Some combinations are avoided so that health and stability are not symbolically stressed. Groupings vary by local paddhati.
Vedha
Stars that obstruct each other
Vedha means blockage: some star pairs are said to cancel or harm each other’s good effects. When vedha appears, families often ask an astrologer about exceptions or compensating factors.
Vasiya (Vashya)
Mutual pull—who supports whom
Vasiya (North Indian: Vashya) checks whether one partner’s sign naturally attracts or steadies the other—care, influence, and romance in balance. Prescribed pairs score well.
Nadi
Same-nadi dosha and heredity
Nakshatras fall in Aadi, Madhya, or Antya nadi. Same nadi for both is often treated as a serious dosha because it suggests similar physical constitution and lineage; different nadis are preferred, with traditional exceptions when other factors are strong.
Stree Deerkha (Stree Dheergham)
Bride’s star distance and her dignity
Stree Deerkha counts from the groom’s star to the bride’s and checks whether the bride’s side sits in a long, favourable arc—associated with her comfort, respect, and prosperity in married life. Rules differ by tradition.
Poruthams: Dina, Gana, Mahendra, Yoni, Rasi, Rajju, Vedha, Vasiya, Nadi, Stree Deerkha.
Frequently asked questions
What is porutham?
Porutham is the South Indian way of checking marriage compatibility. It traditionally lists ten factors: Dina, Gana, Mahendra, Yoni, Rasi, Rajju, Vedha, Vasiya, Nadi, and Stree Deerkha. Scroll to “Meanings of the 10 poruthams” on this page for each one.
How is porutham different from Kundali matching?
Kundali matching uses the North Indian Ashta-Kuta system (36 guna). Porutham is the South Indian approach with ten poruthams. Both need birth date, time, and place.
What does the score out of 10 mean?
The underlying calculation follows the same porutham-style rules; we rescale the headline number to 0–10 for easier reading. Use the per-factor breakdown for detail.
What are Rajju and Vedha in porutham?
Rajju groups nakshatras by body zones; some combinations are avoided for health and stability. Vedha marks obstructing pairs of stars. Full hand charts often use separate Rajju/Vedha tables—our tool focuses on eight Ashta-Kuta factors that overlap with Dina, Gana, Yoni, Rasi, Vasiya, and Nadi; see the glossary for all ten names.
What is Stree Deerkha (Stree Dheergham)?
Stree Deerkha looks at the distance from the groom’s nakshatra to the bride’s in a way linked to the wife’s comfort, dignity, and prosperity. Traditions differ on the exact count considered ideal.
